Divorce with children: where to begin
A divorce does not automatically resolve every issue between parents. The child’s living arrangements, each parent’s participation, maintenance, and division of joint property should be considered separately.
Identify what is already agreed
Write down practical arrangements: where the child currently lives, how they communicate with the other parent, and who pays recurring expenses. A verbal agreement may work day to day, but long-term certainty can require written arrangements.
Gather the basic documents
- marriage and birth records;
- information about income and recurring child-related expenses;
- documents for jointly owned property;
- correspondence showing agreements or disputes.
Do not treat every issue as one claim
The route to ending a marriage and resolving related family matters depends on the circumstances. Before filing, map the separate questions and identify which can be agreed and which may need a dedicated procedure.
